Do you believe you can facilitate change in others and in your community? The impact any individual or group can make is limited only by their aspirations and skills. The mission of the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs is to help our students achieve their goal of impacting the lives of others as counselors or administrators within a variety of school, college, or mental health settings.
To accomplish this objective we work with students to strengthen their academic and communication skills, to develop clear aspirations, and to refine their clinical skills for meeting the emotional needs of both clients and community. Classes are interactive, using modeling, experiential learning, team-building, and practical experiences; faculty also practice active supervision. We make it a point to stay up-to-date on the latest research, ideas and technology, integrating these with the best practices of the past.
The Department of Counseling and Student Affairs houses the University's academic programs of School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling and Student Affairs in Higher Education. The faculty members who make up the Department are dedicated to preparing the highly competent professionals who make a difference within the many communities they serve. A full range of study opportunities exist for those interested in counseling and/or student affairs. A master's degree program is available in School Counseling, along with a sixth year Rank I program. Both are accredited through NCATE and permit graduates to fully achieve state credentials in Kentucky, Tennessee and Indiana. A Mental Health Counseling program, with two options, qualifies graduates for credentials from the Kentucky Boards of Marriage and Family Therapy or the Kentucky Board for Professional Counseling. A Specialist degree is also available for those students who wish to pursue more advanced study in Counseling. Students interested in careers in colleges and universities can matriculate in a nationally recognized Student Affairs program.
The Department is proud of its contributions to the professional community and to the University as well. The faculty are committed to excellence, not only in teaching but also in scholarship and service. We feel certain you will discover a group of educators/scholars dedicated to helping you achieve your goals.
