Program Information

The preparation program leading to the Master of Arts degree and provisional certificate for school counselors are divided into two areas:

  1. Professional Education Requirements (3 semester hours)
    • ED FND 500 Research Methods (required)
  2. Counseling Requirements:
    • CNS 550 Introduction to Counseling (3 hours)
    • CNS 551 Classroom Guidance or PSY 519 Psychological Perspectives on Classroom Behavior (3 hours)
    • CNS 552 Testing and Assessment (3 hours)
    • CNS 554 Group Counseling (3 hours)
    • CNS 555 Social and Cultural Diversity or PSY 520 Individual Differences & Human Diversity (3 hours)
    • CNS 557 Human Development (3 hours)
    • CNS 558 Counseling Theories (3 hours)
    • CNS 559 Counseling Techniques (3 hours; prerequisite: CNS 558)
    • CNS 660 Administration of Counseling Services (3 hours)
    • CNS 568 Counseling Children and Adolescents (3 hours)
    • CNS 590 Practicum (3 hours)

Total: 36 hours

All students must pass a final comprehensive examination. Comprehensive examinations are given in the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Students must meet the criteria established by the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences in order to be eligible to take the comprehensive examination.

*CNS ED 590 (Counseling Practicum) - To enroll in Practicum the student must have completed the following prerequisites: CNS 550, CNS 554, CNS 558, CNS 559 and one other course. Students should request a copy of the practicum manual from the campus bookstore several weeks before the start of the practicum.

Extending the Counseling Certificate

Students who have completed a program of preparation for guidance counselor in grades K-8 may qualify for guidance counseling in grades 5-12 by completing two of the following three courses:

  • CNS 568 - Counseling Children and Adolescents or CNS 562 - Counseling Adolescents,
  • CNS 660 - Administration of Counseling Services or CNS 566 - Secondary Guidance Services,
  • CNS 590 - Practicum

Applicants who have completed a program of preparation for guidance counseling in grades 7-12 or 9-12 may qualify for guidance counseling in grades K-8 by completing two of the following three courses:

  • CNS 568 - Counseling Children and Adolescents or CNS 561 - Counseling Children,
  • CNS 660 - Administration of Counseling Services or CNS 565 - Elementary Guidance Services,
  • CNS 590 - Practicum
