About WKU's ROTC
Who participates in Army ROTC?
At WKU, over 200 students take Army ROTC courses on campus each year. They include students from engineering, science, business, government, english, and nearly all other academic fields.
Each year, about 15 WKU students complete the Army ROTC program and earn commissions as Army officers.
How do I get in the program?
For entering freshman, getting started is as easy as registering for a WKU course, then progressing through the program with one course each semester. Sophmores and transfer students may double up upon basic course classes on campus or enter the advanced program by taking six weeks of paid summer training at Ft. Knox. Veterans, Reservists or Guardsmen may receive placement credit for the first two years of courses and enter the advanced phase of the program. Any of these methods qualifies a student to progress at the beginning of their junior year. Most Army ROTC classes involve one course and lab each semester. What else does our ROTC program offer?
Army ROTC cadets put their leadership studies into action during two field training exercises each year. These weekend activities are required for all cadets in the advanced courses; many students in basic courses choose to participate as well.
An officer is a leader. That's why leadership and management are stressed as part of the ROTC cadets training here at Western Kentucky.
Near the end of the program, cadets attend a summer leadership camp. This tests and evaluates the leadership skills each cadet has developed over the preceeding 3 years. For nurse cadets, this includes a five week internship at an Army hospital. For more information on ROTC and Nursing click here.
