Special Military Training
Students have additional opportunities to volunteer for summer special military training such as Airborne (parachuting) and Air Assault (rappelling from helicopters) or actual training with active army units. Social events include the Dining-In and the Military Ball (see pictures from ROTC Ball 2007). Cadets may compete on a Ranger Challenge team and our rifle team. Also see information about Basic Camp.
1. Airborne Training
The US Army Airborne School, located at Ft. Benning, Georgia, is available to cadets that are enrolled in the program. The course is three weeks long, consisting of a ground week, tower week and jump week. With each week comes different types of training designed to teach you how to parachute out of airplanes and helicopters. It is an exciting non-stop course that will push you to the limit. AIRBORNE!!!
Cadets will learn the skills needed to perform parachute operations during both day and night. Five parachute jumps will be completed from C-130's and C-141's. Upon completion the Parachutist Badge "Silver Wings" is awarded.
2. Air Assault Training
Air Assault training is available to qualified, selected basic and advanced course cadets. The training is two weeks long and is conducted at either Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Ft Shafter, Hawaii or Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. Rappelling techniques from towers and helicopters will be learned. Upon completion the Air Assault badge is awarded.
Cadets will conduct a 12 day course that consists of physical training, sling load training, rappelling and a 12 mile timed road march in full combat gear. This is a tough course that will exhaust you both physically and mentally, but in the long run it will be worth every ounce of energy you put into it!
3. Mountain Warfare Training
Mountain Warfare school is available to qualified, selected advanced course cadets. The training is three weeks long and is conducted at the Ethan Allen Firing Range, Vermont. Basic military mountaineering, lead and party climbing and rescue techniques are taught.
4. Northern Warfare Training Center (NWTC)
Filling the need for special arctic warfare training is the United States Army’s NWTC, an exclusive school that provides training in arctic survival, navigation of land and waterways, military skiing, mountaineering and river crossing operations. The school trains not only active duty soldiers but soldiers from other services, reserve soldiers, ROTC, West Point cadets, and allied military soldiers. Emphasis during the summer is placed on mountain warfare while the winter months are used to train soldiers on how to adapt to living in the field, clothing use and maintenance, as well as snowshoeing and military skiing.
5. Cadet Troop Leader Training (CTLT) Program
CTLT increases each cadet's leadership experience. Each Cadet is assigned to a platoon leader position and given an opportunity to lead soldiers. It familiarizes cadets with the command, training, administration and logistical functions of active duty units. It also exposes cadets to the on-duty and off-duty environment of the junior officer. The training is for a period of three weeks following the completion of Advanced Camp.
