Physical Education


PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

The major in physical education (reference number 587) requires a minimum of 48 semester hours and leads to a bachelor of science degree. The major is performance-based with most ot the courses offered only once each academic year. Adherence to the following course sequence is required to complete the program in eight semesters.

A health minor is recommended for all teacher certification physical education majors. BIOL 131 and PHYS 101 are recommended for physical education majors in meeting the natural sciences general education requirements. Qualifications to continue in the program after the freshman year will be based on program competency achievement (i.e. evaluation of physical fitness, sports skill abilities, skill knowledge, teacher aptitude, and personal adjustment). Students majoring in physical education are required to meet with their advisor before enrolling for the next semester. Students may earn the bachelor of science degree with a major in physical education with or without teacher education.

TEACHER EDUCATION OPTION
K-12 Certification

As one of the three tracts in the Physical Education program, students may opt to pursue teaching certification. A baccalaureate degree in this area will certify students to teach Kindergarten through 12th grade Physical Education. The curriculum for this area of study includes scientific basis of movement, educational gymnastics, dance, individual and team sports, health-related fitness. Scientific principles in exercise physiology, kinesiology, motor development together with courses in adapted Physical Education provide the student an opportunity to develop a keen understanding of appropriate methods and materials for public school teaching.

EXERCISE SCIENCE OPTION

The exercise science option includes extensive study in the science areas of exercise physiology, kinesiology, and biomechanics. Students who complete this option will be prepared for Health/Fitness Instructor Certification from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). With further study their careers could include such diverse occupations as occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, medicine, research, nutrition, academics, personal training, wellness, and physical education.

SPORTS/FITNESS/WELLNESS OPTION

The Sports/Fitness/Wellness option offers an opportunity for study in one of three areas. The nine hours of elective courses allow for concentrated study in the chosen area. The courses will be selected in consultation with the student's advisor and can include courses from disciplines in other colleges. Students who elect sport as an area of study will be primarily interested in coaching. Students in the fitness and wellness areas will primarily be focused on careers in fitness centers and clinical institutions.

PE MINOR

The minor in physical education (reference number 432) requires a minimum of 25 semester hours. This minor is not a certifiable teaching field in Kentucky. The requirements may be obtained by contacting the head of the department.

ATHLETIC COACHING MINOR

The minor in athletic coaching (reference number 320) requires 18 to 23 hours. Students must complete the following courses: PE290, 291, 391, 440, 493. In addition to these core courses, students shall select seven (7) to nine (9) hours from the following coaching courses: PE333, 340, 341, 342, 343, 344, or 348. The minor is designed for thoses persons who want to enter a teaching and coaching career and who do not desire to major in physical education.

Students will then choose 15 hours of electives dependent upon which option they choose to pursue.

EXERCISE SCIENCE OPTION:
The Exercise Science specialization is designed to prepare students for various career options in within this dynamic field. Western's Master's program also provides excellent preparation for students wishing to continue their education in a related doctoral program. Students select core and elective classes in conjunction with a graduate advisor. This rigorous coursework permitting in-depth study of various topics is coupled with research and intern opportunities that enhance learning by allowing students to acquire hands-on experiences in numerous areas of Exercise Science.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/PEDAGOGY OPTION:
Students following this option must meet all requirements for Kentucky K-12 Physical Education Certification. The student choosing this option must take a variety of teaching-oriented courses along with six hours of electives including three hours from "Professional Foundations in Physical Education" and three hours from "Applications in Physical Education." Nine hours of electives are chosen with advisor approval from a selected list of courses. This option is designed for teachers wishing to advance professionally and improve their teaching effectiveness.

Note: Students pursuing the Rank II requirements for Kentucky Teacher Certification can choose either option. Both options meet the Advanced Kentucky Teacher Standards.
