Dr. Shedd's expertise was in the area of specific learning disabilities, especially dyslexia. In addition to being head of the Department of Psychology at Western, Shedd was director of Western's Literacy Center and served as a consultant to both the Kentucky Department of Mental Health and the Kentucky Department of Corrections. During his tenure at Western, he was also a consultant to the Office of Economic Development in Washington, D.C. At Berea College, Shedd directed the Reading Research Institute. During his short career, he also served as director of the Reading Disability Center and Clinic of Alabama Medical College in Birmingham.
Shedd's research has had a lasting effect on the treatment of reading disorders in Kentucky and beyond. Quite a few schools and organization involved with the treatment of reading disorders advocate the use of diagnostic and treatment methods developed by Shedd. Among these are the Charles L. Shedd School of Dyslexia in Mayfield, Kentucky and the Shelton School in Dallas, Texas. On its web site, the Shelton School notes 23 characteristics of dyslexia and related disorders identified by Shedd. The Worthmore Academy in Indianapolis, on its web site, says
The center is designed to meet the academic and social needs of every child enrolled. We meet those needs by utilizing the principles of Dr. Charles L. Shedd, who integrated the best known teaching methods and styles into a multisensory structured program. The program was recognized and honored by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare as one of the most effective programs for teaching the learning disabled student.
The Charles L. Shedd Kentucky Association was founded in 1968 as a non-profit organization to advocate for people with dyslexia, ADD and ADHD. According to the Association's web site, their mission is to provide
educational remediation through highly structured teaching methods and materials utilizing a multisensory approach and one-to-one instruction. We have been providing this service for over 30 years and have helped many children and adults reach their potential. Dr. Shedd's philosophy was to "provide maximal learning for minimal cost." The Shedd programs provide "affordable alternatives" to costly private schools. With proper help, these children can have unlimited choices in their adult lives.
